Approximately one in five American adults–more than 46 million–are categorized with some form of mental illness, and approximately one-fourth of these are identified as Serious Mental Health illness. Almost one-half of teens experience mental illness, with 22% of these categorized as Serious Mental Health Illness.

The experience of mental illness is also linked to substance abuse in alomst 20% of cases. Likewise, almost half of adults presenting a substance use disorder also struggle with mental health illness. Adolescence are particularly at risk for the development of co-concurring mental health and substance abuse issues.
